During his visit to the United States, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir was featured on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square. Images of the Field Marshal, along with the Pakistani flag, were displayed as part of the welcome.
Field Marshal Munir is currently on a week-long visit to the US, reportedly at the invitation of the US military. He was recently promoted to the rank of Field Marshal last month. The video displayed in Times Square also included footage of him with US senators and Pakistani children, portraying Pakistan as a forward-thinking nation focused on education, technology, and peace.
The Times Square campaign, intended to welcome the Pakistani military leader, is scheduled to run for a week and is said to be launched by the local administration, highlighting the praise he’s received for his role in the recent conflict with India.
Prior to COAS Munir’s visit, General Michael Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (Centcom), lauded Field Marshal Munir and the Pakistan Army. In his testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, General Kurilla described Pakistan as a “phenomenal partner in the counterterrorism world,” emphasizing their crucial role in operations against Daesh-Khorasan. He highlighted their successful partnership, mentioning the killing of dozens of Daesh-Khorasan members and the capture of several high-value individuals through intelligence sharing.
Kurilla cited the example of Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, allegedly involved in the 2021 Kabul airport suicide bombing. He recounted that after Jafar’s arrest, Field Marshal Munir immediately contacted him, offering to extradite him to the US and asking that the Secretary of Defense and the President be informed.
