Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) is celebrating a significant achievement in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025. Out of 2,526 universities from 130 countries assessed for their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), RMU secured a global ranking within the 601 band. Notably, it claimed the top spot in Punjab and ranked second among all public and private medical universities in Pakistan.
This accomplishment reaffirms RMU’s dedication to sustainable development. The university previously held the top position among medical universities in Pakistan in the 2022 Impact Rankings and was recognized as the leading mono-discipline university in the country in 2021.
In this year’s rankings, RMU excelled in Gender Equality, securing the number one position in Pakistan among both public and private universities. Its global ranking of 74th in this category highlights its commitment to gender empowerment through inclusive policies and female leadership.
RMU also demonstrated strong performance in other key areas, including Good Health and Well-being (ranking 301), Quality Education (ranking 601), and Climate Action (ranking 401).
Professor Dr. Muhammad Umar, Vice Chancellor of RMU, emphasized the significance of these results, stating that they reflect the university’s visionary leadership, innovative academic strategies, and unwavering commitment to global health and equity. He pointed out that RMU, despite being a relatively young medical university established in 2017 and accredited in 2020, has quickly risen to prominence.
Professor Umar further highlighted that RMU’s consistent ranking among the top universities, despite facing financial constraints and staff shortages, underscores the high quality of medical education, teaching, training, and research offered at the institution.
He also noted RMU’s efforts in modernizing its curriculum to align with international standards, including the adoption of an integrated modular curriculum based on the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) guidelines and the introduction of the University Residency Program (URP) according to ACGME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) standards. He emphasized the university’s robust research system, which includes over 30 master’s and PhD programs.
