Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is pushing for a faster transition to electric vehicles in Pakistan, aiming to decrease the country’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels. He recently instructed officials to finalize the Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy 2025 and present it to the federal cabinet for approval without delay.
This directive came during a high-level meeting held on Saturday, where the Prime Minister reviewed the EV policy framework. Sharif emphasized the need to prioritize initiatives that encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, specifically highlighting the importance of supporting battery-powered motorcycles, scooters, rickshaws, cars, and buses.
He also stressed the critical role of developing the necessary infrastructure for EV adoption, stating that a network of charging stations and battery swapping facilities is crucial for a sustainable and widespread transition to electric mobility. Furthermore, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of empowering local industries to ramp up their manufacturing capabilities, especially in the production of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles.
The meeting was attended by several key government officials, including Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahmad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar.
